What is an EVM wallet address?

An EVM wallet address is the public identifier of an account on Ethereum or any chain built on the same technology, the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). It is what you give someone to receive crypto, and what you paste into an explorer to see an account's history. This page explains how it looks, why one address works on many chains, and what to check before you send money to one.

What it looks like

An EVM address is 0x followed by 40 characters made of the digits 0-9 and the letters a-f, 42 characters in total:

0xd8dA6BF26964aF9D7eEd9e03E53415D37aA96045

  • Upper and lower case letters are not decoration. Mixed case carries a checksum (EIP-55), so a wallet can notice most typing errors. Copy and paste the address instead of typing it.
  • No spaces, no hyphens. If it is shorter or longer, or contains other letters, it is not a valid EVM address.

Which networks use it

All EVM chains share the format: Ethereum, BNB Chain, Polygon, Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, Avalanche's C-Chain and many more.

  • One address, many chains. The same private key controls the same address on every EVM chain. A wallet like MetaMask therefore shows one address for all of them.
  • But balances are separate. What you hold on Ethereum is not on Polygon. You choose the chain (the network) when you send, and the funds arrive on that chain.

Not every address is a person

On EVM chains there are two kinds of accounts that look the same:

  • A wallet account controlled by a private key (yours, an exchange's).
  • A smart contract, for example a token or an app. It has an address of the same format, but no private key controls it.

An explorer tells them apart: a contract shows its code and is marked as a contract. Sending funds to a contract that was not built to receive them can lock them.

What other address formats look like

Chain Looks like
EVM chains0x + 40 characters
Bitcoinstarts with 1, 3 or bc1
Tronstarts with T, 34 characters
Solanaa string of 32-44 letters and digits, no 0x

An address from one family does not work on another. See How to track a Tron or Solana wallet.

How to look an EVM address up

  1. Open the explorer for the chain you care about and paste the address. Best blockchain explorers compared lists the usual ones.
  2. Read the basics: balance, number of transactions, when it was first active, and whether it is a contract.
  3. Check who it deals with. A graph of counterparties shows whether it works with exchanges and known protocols or with flagged addresses. See How to track a crypto wallet for free.
  4. Compare more than the first and last characters. Look-alike addresses ("address poisoning") copy the beginning and end of a real one.

Check before you send

  • Right chain? Ask the receiver which network, and send a small test amount first.
  • Right address? Take it from a source you trust, and compare the whole string.
  • Known problem? Look it up for labels and history. See How to check if a crypto address is a scam. A clean result is never a guarantee.
  • Exchange deposit address? Use only the address and network your exchange shows you for that coin.

ENS names

An ENS name such as name.eth is a readable alias that points to an address. It is convenient, but check which address it resolves to before you rely on it.

Frequently asked questions

What is an EVM wallet address?
The public address of an account on Ethereum or an Ethereum-compatible chain: 0x followed by 40 hexadecimal characters.

Is my Ethereum address the same on Polygon or BNB Chain?
Yes. The same address works on every EVM chain, and the same private key controls it. The balances are separate on each chain.

Is it safe to share my EVM address?
Yes, it is meant to be shared. Anyone can see its public history, though, so use a separate address if you want to keep activity apart. Never share your seed phrase or private key.

What happens if I send funds on the wrong chain?
They usually arrive on the chain you used, at the same address. Whether you can reach them depends on the wallet and the chain, and funds sent to an exchange deposit address on the wrong network may be lost.

Can I tell from the address if it is a contract?
No, the format is the same. An explorer shows whether an address is a contract.

Does an EVM address work for Bitcoin or Solana?
No. They use different formats and different networks.
